The Special Olympics Illinois Champions Ball is approaching on October 26, and we’re excited to highlight four incredible athletes who will play a special role in the event.
As these athletes prepare for their big night, their stories highlight the transformative impact of Special Olympics Illinois. Here’s a glimpse into their journeys.
Zinyra “Z” Ross: The Rebound Queen
Zinyra “Z” Ross, this year’s Champions Ball featured athlete, has been with Special Olympics Illinois for more than 14 years. For her, Special Olympics Illinois has provided a safe space to discover her strengths and gifts. “It has impacted my life by giving me a space to patiently discover my true purpose,” Z explains. This journey of self-discovery has allowed her to positively impact others, spreading joy wherever she goes.
As an Athlete Leader, Z cherishes the platform to share her life’s challenges and triumphs. She’s also a fierce competitor in basketball, earning the nickname “Rebound Queen” for her aggressive style of play, even as the only girl on the team. Z also competes in track, soccer, and equestrian sports.
This year’s Champions Ball holds special significance for Z as she plans to introduce her mother on stage. “She’s very shy when it comes to public speaking, but she’s always helping others. Now people can clap for her,” Z says with pride. Her goal is to inspire attendees and encourage their continued support for Special Olympics Illinois.
Lily Goodfellow: From Young Athlete to Aspiring Broadcaster
Lily Goodfellow, this year’s co-emcee alongside WGN-TV’s Erin McElroy, has been involved with Special Olympics Illinois since she was four years old, starting as one of the first participants in the Young Athletes program. Over the years, she has grown into a confident leader, honing her public speaking skills as a Global Messenger and Athlete Leader. “Special Olympics Illinois has taught me that I can do anything if I work hard,” Lily shares.
Her experiences as an emcee and interviewer have prepared her for a future in broadcasting, a dream she’s actively pursuing. Whether it’s giving speeches or co-hosting events like the Chicago Ducky Derby festival, Lily loves the opportunity to meet new people and have fun.
At the Champions Ball, she’s most excited to take the stage, meet more people, and have an unforgettable evening.
Katie O’Neill: Finding Her Voice and Confidence
Katie O’Neill has been part of Special Olympics Illinois for six years and describes her experience as life changing. “Special Olympics has completely changed me for the better,” Katie says. Participating in sports like gymnastics has not only given her confidence but has also spilled over into other aspects of her life, making her work harder and push herself further.
In 2019, Katie became an Athlete Leader, a role that has transformed her communication skills. “It has helped me to have better and more meaningful conversations. I now feel like I have a voice, and people actually want to hear what I have to say,” Katie reflects.
Excited for her role as Athlete Representative at Champions Ball, Katie loves dressing up and can’t wait to reconnect with her friend Alex. She’s also on the lookout for new sports, hoping to try flag football soon.
Alex Huegen: Thriving in Leadership and Sports
With more than 13 years at Special Olympics Illinois, Alex Huegen’s journey is filled with growth and opportunity. Special Olympics Illinois has pushed him to try new sports, pursue higher education, and even land a full-time job. “It has given me the encouragement to play new sports, go to college, and run cross country,” Alex shares.
Now an Athlete Leader and board member of Special Olympics Illinois, Alex is deeply involved in many aspects of the organization, from giving speeches to helping with Illinois Law Enforcement Torch Run events. His favorite sports include snowshoeing, floor hockey, flag football, basketball, and track and field.
Attending Champions Ball also as an Athlete Representative, Alex looks forward to reconnecting with people he hasn’t seen in a while and personally thanking donors who make events like this possible.
