Respect Week

What Is Respect Week?

Respect Week is a week long engagement hosted by the Special Olympics Illinois Youth Activation Committee. This is a week where schools and communities across the state pledge to #ChooseToInclude and promote respect for all. Each year we have a theme associated with the week that is also determined by the Youth Activation Committee. This year’s theme is Respect University. The committee works diligently to develop a full Respect Tool Kit to help all those looking to participate, both in school and on social media.

The largest celebrated day is Wednesday as it aligns with the Spread the Word: Inclusion Campaign each year. Historically in Illinois, this is the day we call Respect Day and ask everyone to wear their Respect gear. If you would like to purchase Respect University gear, please visit our souvenir store.

The Special Olympics Youth Activation Committee has chosen to host a Disabilities Awareness Spirit Week as part of Respect Week this year!

Each day everyone is asked to wear a specific color that matches an awareness ribbon for varying disabilities. This year, our Disability Awareness Spirit Days are:

Monday: Vision Impairments and Blindness – White
Tuesday: Traumatic Brain Injury – Green
Wednesday: Sensory Processing Disorder – Blue or Orange
Thursday: Rett Syndrome – Purple
Friday: Spina Bifida – Yellow

A tool kit will be sent out with active links to promote engagement across the state.
