What is the Plane Pull?

The Plane Pull features the ultimate tug-of-war competition, as teams of up to 10 battle a United Airlines 737, weighing more than 60,000  lbs. That is right, the plane weighs nearly 3 tons! Individuals must raise a minimum of $50 to participate ($500 for a team of 10). Students with a valid school ID may participate for a reduced rate of $30 each. School ID must be present at check-in the morning of the event.

Teams compete in one of three divisions:

  • Open Division: Ideal for companies, school teams, clubs, Friends and Families
  • Public Safety Division: law enforcement, firefighters, paramedics, EMT, DNR, DOC and military personnel; teams need at least 10 public safety competitors to qualify for this division
  • SIU Division (a division created solely for students and staff of Southern Illinois University)

***If we are successful in recruiting 5 teams of a specific type (i.e. fitness clubs or gyms), Special Olympics Illinois will create an additional division for competition. All divisions must have a minimum of 3 teams the morning of the event to be valid. If not, teams will be moved to Open Division for competition. ***

What is the LETR Car Show?

New this year, the Law Enforcement Torch Run will be hosting a Car Show in conjunction with the Southern IL Plane Pull event.  Car enthusiasts are encouraged to show off their hot rod, custom show car, trucks, motorcycles or any other vehicle all to benefit the athletes of Special Olympics Illinois! Participants are required to raise or donate a minimum of $30 for entry to the event. Awards will be given to Best in Show and Special Olympics athlete choice.

Car Show Arrival and Departure Times:

The LETR Car Show will be held on the ramp outside the SIU School of Aviation hanger at the Southern Illinois Airport. Due to this event being held on an active airfield, entrance and exit of vehicles from the event site will be limited.  All participants must arrive between 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. and remain until the conclusion of the event (approximately 1 PM).  All vehicles must have an Airport Escort when arriving/leaving the tarmac. This is for the safety of our participants and those pilots flying into the airport.

Does it cost to attend?

The Southern IL Plane Pull and Car Show is free to all spectators and perfect for individuals of all ages.  Come out and watch your participants test their strength or cruise through and enjoy the various vehicles on display.  The event will include music as well as vendors. 17th Street BBQ will be onsite providing lunches for participants and spectators!

Who Benefits?

All proceeds collected through the Plane Pull and Car Show benefit the more than 23,000 athletes and over 17,000 Young Athletes (ages 2-7) currently participating with Special Olympics Illinois.  Donations raised through events such as the Southern Illinois Plane Pull allow Special Olympics to provide year-round sports training and competitions at no cost to our athletes or their families.
